Is Car Traffic In Vienna Really In Decline?

About a year ago, I attended a community meeting regarding the redesign of the street where I live. During the meeting, I talked to a city official about the volume of car traffic in Vienna. I argued that based on the data from issued car permits, traffic is increasing. To my surprise, he responded that my assertion was not accurate. He stated that despite a steady rise in car ownership, actual traffic had been decreasing due to people using their cars less frequently. He backed his claim by citing data from the “Dauerzählstellen.” 1

Recently, I had the opportunity to analyze said data. Unfortunately, it seems he was wrong. Except for a temporary decrease caused by the COVID pandemic, current traffic levels remain close to the peak observed around 2019. Furthermore, recent measurements indicate an upward trend in most locations compared to the previous years month. If anything, one could argue that traffic is stagnating, despite the increasing number of cars. Nonetheless, I find solace in the fact that, at the very least, the dashboard turned out aesthetically pleasing.
